Happy Pink Saturday! – Bubble Yum

Happy Pink Saturday!
Here is a blast from the past. Bubble Yum, The original bubble gum.
Bubble Yum was introduced in 1975 (which would make me 10) by LifeSavers, the pink bubble gum was the first soft bubble gum ever created its no wonder it became so popular. Growing up there was a little store (Zip n Go) down the street from our house. It was a little ways away and we had to cross a pretty busy street to get there. (boy, how times have changed, I wouldn't let my kids go that far away today) Jason (my brother) and I would load up on candy and gum.
.
The greatest thing about Bubble Yum was the huge bubbles you could blow. It was fun until the huge bubble popped and it got all over your face and in your hair. What great memories!

That's me, I am even wearing pink pants!

Bubble Gum flavored cough syrup – Really?

I have a few children that have been suffering from a cold. You know the kind when your nose is runny and it is running down the back of your throat and it's killing you with a never ending cough so you feel like you going to die, kind of cold. It is awful it feel that sick.

Trying to relive their symptoms I gave them some cold medicine. It tastes like bubblegum but I found myself having to beg them to take it. With whining and fussing "I hate this kind of medicine" I told them you have NO idea how good this tastes compared to what I use to take.

Does anyone remember taking this yummy hot brown goo??

A Tribute to Grandma's Apron

The Apron

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
~~~~
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
~~~~
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
~~~~
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
~~
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.
Happy Birthday Kristen!!
This has been the year of the un birthday. Our lives have been so crazy (and full of illness), that birthdays have come and gone. Today Kristen spoiled herself and Me too. First she got her hair trimmed, bought a couple new shirts and then took herself and me to get a pedicure. Happy Birthday Sweetheart! I love you, and I am so proud of the person you are becoming! (and thanks for the pedicure, I loved it!)
Home is … Wearing Aprons in the Kitchen & Baked Beans
This weeks theme is about aprons in the kitchen,
Okay, I love this theme, because I LOVE vintage aprons. I remember my grandmothers always in an apron; they were always in the kitchen. Family gatherings always revolved around great food! I remember my Nana’s amazing baked beans at every holiday and picnic. I would ask her, Nana is there a recipe for your baked beans? She would always say, “oh I throw a little of this in and a little of that in there” Over the years I have worked very hard to make those baked beans. And I have done it!! I can make them just as I remember them, and it is a little bit of this and a little bit of that until there are just right!
Growing up we always had aprons hanging in the kitchen ready for any cooking we would do. My Mom still has a lot of them and some have been past down, I come a long line of amazing cooks. I love that there seems to be a longing look back at life and that there is a new love for cooking, entertaining, and all things vintage. There was a simplicity of life back then, not necessarily easy but simple. Aprons make me happy!! Here are just a few of my yummys!!
Love this one
Rebecca Catherine Leonard (Dorfmeier)
This obituary was written by my brother Jared:
Our sweet Rebecca passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She was born on November 13, 1978, here in Fresno, Ca.
Rebecca will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and her sweet nature. Becca had a great ability to always make people feel welcome and loved. It is her kind, warm, spritely spirit that gave her the ability to be a wonderful, wife, mother, granddaughter, daughter, sister and especially friend.
Becca had a great passion for education and her children. In 2003, she received her BA in psychology from California State University, Fresno. She graduated with honors and as secretary in her student organization. However, over the past seven years her true enjoyment has been in the raising of her three children with Jared, her husband of nine years.
Becca will certainly be called blessed by many generations to come. She was loved by all who knew her. May she rest in her Heavenly Father's care until she can be reunited with her husband and children. She is survived by her husband Jared; and their three children Elijah (age seven), and twin daughters, Rachel and Lauren (age four).
Visitation will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Peachwood Ward, Fresno North Stake Center, 220 N. Peach, Clovis, CA. 93612 on Monday, October 5, 2009, from 12:00 noon to 12:45 p.m
A Memorial Service will begin in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow at Clovis District Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to the Rebecca Leonard Memorial Fund, Account #1032008, at Golden One Credit Union, 1030 Shaw Ave, Clovis, Ca 93612. PALM MEMORIAL CHAPEL 2983 Tulare Street Fresno, Ca. (559)233-7267
How Quickly Things Can Change
When it comes to our lives we move through each day thinking there will be a next. I think we take for granted those around us that we love. I been thinking a lot this week as my sister in law Becca has been fighting for her life. How quickly things can change, how you never know day from day. Becca was so young, only 30, she was a mother of 3 beautiful children, a 7 year old boy and 4 year old twins girls.
~
Now my thoughts are with my brother Jared and the things he will have to face as he moves forward from this place. He will miss his sweetheart greatly but knows she is free of her pains. I am so grateful to have the gospel in my life, to know the plan and to know they will be together again as a family.
I pray we will look at each day as a gift to be cherished and not wasted away in trivial things. I hope we can all love one other and serve each other and how important it is to make memories each day.
Dressing up the Table!
~
I guess my true love of entertaining came from my Mom, for years growing up we hosted every Holiday Meal, Family Get Together, Birthday, Parties etc. And everything was done with flair. Tablecloths, dishes, glass stemware, center pieces and the most incredible food you could ever desire.
Now it wasn’t just food, it had to have every color, texture and temperature. Hot was to be served hot and cold serve cold!! Of course timing is everything. There was always a table for the array of desserts. Yummy!! What memories I have, the pure joy of bringing people together. Thank you Mom for all your hard work, and instilling in me a sense of “doing it right”.
Oh how my heart races when I see glassware, table clothes, candles, place cards, serving pieces, anything that would make the setting perfect. I love all this stuff!!
